Q1: Check the WRONG statement regarding the EPIDEMIOLOGY of Schizophrenia:
(a) Compared to women onset of schizophrenia is earlier in men.
(b) Male schizophrenic patients have better outcome than females.
(c) Schizophrenia patients are more likely to be born in winter and early spring.

b) Infact females have a better outcome compared to their male counterparts.
onset of schizophrenia is earlier in males with women showing a bimodal age distribution with a second peak in middle age.

query

Post  adisuper on Fri Jun 14, 2013 12:04 pm

i have confusion regarding the role of nicotine in schizophrenia.
It is said that nicotine stimulates the dopaminergic neurons the fact which aids to its addictive potential and explains the efforts to use it in parkinsonism.
but it is also written that nicotine reduces positive symptoms of schizophrenia especially auditory hallucinations and hence those who smokes self medicates them with this neurotransmitter.
can someone please clear my confusion that how it helps with psychosis while it stimulates dopminergic neurons
thanks
